GO 15 – Sustainable and Reliable Power Grids

In 2014, ONS`s General Director, Hermes Chipp, held the Presidency of GO15, with the CEO of PJM Interconnection, from the United States, Terry Boston, and the CEO of Elia Group, which operates in Belgium and Germany, Daniel Dobenni as vice-presidents.

ONS continued to participate in this group, as it is considered to be an important and unique forum for dealing with matters of interest for the operations of the Brazilian electrical system. The Operator participated directly in the work done regarding the issues that were considered priorities, taking over the coordination on some of these issues:

  • Impact assessment and propose solutions to the safety of electrical systems operation due to significant penetration of new renewable sources, wind and solar, centralized and decentralized
  • Phasor Measurement Units (PMU) application, especially in real-time;
  • Safety and reliability, focusing on dynamic assessment system, preventive measures in the operation planning stage;
  • Capacity of electrical systems withstand natural disasters;

Considering the expected developments in the composition of supply and electricity demand in the world, ONS also monitors issues that will certainly have important repercussions for the operation of the BIPS in the future, such as:

  • Improving energy management systems used in real-time;
  • New IT solutions for the operation of electrical systems;
  • Development and penetration of electric vehicles;
  • Energy storage systems.
