Implementation of Alternative Sources in BIPS

In Brazil, since the establishment in 2002 of the Programme of Incentives for Alternative Electricity Sources (Proinfa), there have been a growing interest in wind energy sources. In 2005, Brazil had about 30 MW of installed capacity. In 2011, reached 1,509 MW. In December 2013 reached the milestone of 2,047 MW and by 2017  6,430 MW more will be installed, thus constituting one of the most promising markets for wind power generation in the coming years.

The deployment of a large number of wind farms in the South and Northeast regions demand robust structural solutions in the core network to enable the transportation of its production. Moreover, it requires the development of projects aiming to improve the process of forecasting wind generation seeking its scheduling and dispatch. On the other hand, seasonality and intermittency of wind generation directly impact the systemic operation, requiring control actions and / or additional operative measures to ensure operational safety.

Faced with this challenge, the Board of ONS has created a working group aimed to wind power generation, seeking the organization of the process and the structuring of a sustainable solution for the deployment of wind farms in BIPS. This group joins in a corporate form, all the studies and analyzes on wind generation in progress in the organization, with the aim of ensuring the integrity, uniqueness and robustness of the results to be obtained.

Meanwhile, the ONS is participating in the GO 15 international committee, which brings together the sixteen largest operators of power systems in the world, responsible for serving over 70% of global electricity demand. One of its working groups is dedicated to the integration of new renewable energy sources. ONS took over the coordination of one of the task forces of this group, which focuses on the systemic aspects of security associated with the penetration of wind power generation in power systems.
